City Harvest is seeking students of nutrition or a related field who are interested in gaining experience facilitating cooking and nutrition classes as well as teaching nutrition to either families or senior citizens. The internship is a minimum of 60 hours spread over an 8 week period, which may be applied towards field work hours or to gain practical experience in the field of nutrition education.
Nutrition Education programs at City Harvest provide tools to low-income individuals, families, and communities to help them prevent and manage diet-related diseases through improved skills and knowledge. Our nutrition education staff - along with volunteer chefs, nutritionists and class managers - teach courses focusing on healthy cooking techniques, nutrition information, and physical activity at partnering agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, schools, senior centers, and other CBOs. All courses are 8 weeks long, with participants meeting for two hours each week.
Responsibilities:
Attend one half-day training to learn about City Harvest nutrition education programs, intern roles and responsibilities, and facilitation skills
Manage implementation of one 8-week nutrition education course by coordinating with the site director, class volunteers, and City Harvest staff
Lead each class (2-hour classes for 8 weeks) and manage the implementation of cooking and nutrition
activities (with assistance from trained volunteers)
Teach nutrition lessons as a component of each class
Ensure all materials (groceries, nutrition education tools, and so on) are present for each class
Maintain required paperwork including attendance, receipts, and weekly class evaluations
Where needed, lead participants in age-appropriate exercises
Provide basic instruction in finance and budgeting using prepared curriculum
Requirements:
Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree candidate studying nutrition, nutrition education, or related field
Ability to commit to a minimum of 7 hours per week. Most of this time will be at community organizations
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
Comfortable working with diverse cultures
Comfortable speaking in front of an audience
Interest in cooking
Willingness to travel to Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx via public transportation, or Staten Island if you own a car
Flexibility and able to implement creative solutions
