Internship: Physical Activity Program Implementation

Project description

Physical Activity Program Implementation

Background

In FY10, the New York City DOHMH and DOE launched an initiative called Move-To-Improve (MTI). Funded by the City Council, MTI is a physical education program designed for kindergarten, first, second and third grade teachers in New York City public schools. The goal of the program is to encourage classroom teachers to increase movement time for their students by implementing physical activity within their classrooms.

Schools across NYC are invited to apply to participate in the MTI program through an online grant application. Selected schools must send at least 6 staff members to a 3-hour training. In return, classroom teachers receive a manual and equipment free of charge, and are also paid the NYC professional development stipend.

In FY10, the MTI program is planning on training 2,000 elementary school staff from 300 schools.

Roles and responsibilities

The MTI program is looking for a part-time intern who will assist in program implementation. Responsibilities will include attending workshops, communicating with elementary school staff, data entry, and general office responsibilities.

We anticipate this project will require 20 hours per week throughout the fall semester, with the potential to expand into the spring. This internship is unpaid but we would happily support a practicum student or an independent study. If you are interested in this position, please send resumes and cover letters to Lillian Dunn at LDunn@health.nyc.gov.
